VAT tax in Mexico for Foreign Meetings, Conventions, Congress, or Fairs

As of January 2004, Mexico has repealed its long-standing 16 percent value-added tax for foreign meetings and conventions. These activities will now be classified as an export, which means that foreign tourists who travel to Mexico expressly to participate in congress, conventions or fairs are exempt from paying the VAT tax for Resort/Hotel and related services provided by the Resorts/Hotels. In order to enjoy this exemption, planners and clients have to meet certain requirements. These includes having the participants confirm migratory status, pay for services with a credit card issued by a foreign country, and make arrangements for their hotel and related services through the organizers of the event.
